The Romani People

The Connection Between the Roma and Their Horses

The Romani people originally bred Gypsy Cobs to pull their living wagons or a rulley, a four-wheeled cart often used for errands.

Although many Roma have now shed the more traditional nomadic lifestyle for a motorized form of moveable home, many still breed Gypsy Cobs as a source of Gypsy pride.

Breeders are continually striving to improve their horses' characteristics and take great pride in the ancestry of their horses' bloodlines although historically they have not kept written records.

There is a mutual affection between Gypsies and their horses, and it is a matter of honour and pride in working with Gypsy Cobs to reclaim the road and their Gypsy legacy.
